It is with deep sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our “Golden Boy”, Cooper. Like many of our senior herd, Cooper, faced quite a lot of health challenges over his 30 year lifetime, requiring incredibly specialized diets, medications, diligent supervision and frequent health checkups. Last year, he had to be hospitalized twice and we are incredibly grateful that we were able to spend more time with him each time he returned home. His last time in the hospital revealed more serious problems, including what was believed to likely be cancer. After this, we knew it was only a matter of time, but strove to give him as long and healthy, happy, comfortable life as possible.
Since then, Cooper seemed to be doing very well without any indications of decline until after our beloved Lucius (Cooper’s best friend) passed in mid- June. Having a better picture of the state of a fast growing tumor in his final week, we are amazed he remained so strong and healthy for as long as he did. We have a feeling that Cooper was hanging on to support Lucius throughout his own injury and transition. As founding members of the SIB herd, they had a deep and lasting bond and although we are devastated at the loss of Cooper, especially so shortly after Lu, it is not entirely surprising that the two would journey on so close together. Cooper was the last living member of the original SIB herd, which also included Condina, Cosmo and Lucius.
Known for his gentle spirit and calm, quiet nature. Cooper’s smaller size and easy demeanor created a space of comfort and safety for those who worked with him. Despite his unimposing and relaxed vibe, Cooper was incredibly thoughtful and careful. He encouraged people to pay close attention in order to read his subtle cues; if he had something important to say, he made sure to let you know with gentle persistence and patient insistence (especially if there was a feed bucket involved).
Although it may not have been the first thing people noticed about him, Cooper was an incredibly brave horse. Throughout his life he overcame a lot, taking his time to meet and rise to challenges without fleeing, but instead carefully considering before making a move. As a smaller guy, he had his share of challengers but over time he became a strong, senior leader of the herd, without being showy about it. He fought through his health issues valiantly and continued to have a great love of roaming the hills. He especially valued companionship and truly LOVED his herd (human and equine alike). He had special and unique relationships with each of the members including the donkeys whom he palled around with often, creating a bridge between the packs.
Cooper was our calm, loyal, quiet, fun, patient, funny, brave, beloved Golden Boy. He brought light into the lives of the great many that he touched and taught in his long career as an equine co-facilitator at Stand InBalance. Life is not the same without him in it. He is deeply missed by all and will be impossible to ever forget.
