Intention setting for the workplace?

The New Year is a powerful time to make both personal and professional resolutions. When setting intentions for the New Year, have you ever set specific intentions for your workplace? Often, we’ll set career goals but neglect our intentions for the day to day happenings we encounter at work. Goals are different than intentions. An intention can be defined as an act or instance of determining mentally upon some action or result.

Intentions can serve as powerful guidelines when interacting with ourselves and others in any scenario. Below are six benefits of intention setting at work.

  1. Intentions have no limits. Setting intentions doesn’t stop with you, it has an impact on those around you.
  2. Intentions are expansive. Intentions effect not only how you want to live your life but how you want to impact others, creating an impact both locally and globally.
  3. Setting intentions makes you more effective. You’ll find power in stating your intention, this focuses your heart and mind to set out to do what you really want to be doing.
  4. Setting intentions helps you get out of your head. Creating an intention takes your mind off of the problem or limitation and puts you into a state of action rather than reflection.
  5. Setting intentions opens your eyes to things you may have otherwise missed. Intentions serve as powerful reminders to do things you normally may not remember to do. Do you ever go through the day never noticing the beauty or small kind gestures of others? If so, setting an intention to pause and “see” the world with gratitude can change your whole day.
  6. Intentions can include global contributions. We often feel powerless over what is going on in the world. Just saying out loud you intend to be part of global change is empowering and leads you to recognize how your actions can and do have an impact.

So, how about setting intentions before that Monday morning meeting?  Try it for a week and see if any changes occur.  It is our responsibility to bring our best foot forward for the New Year. Intentions allow us to aim high, so why not be the change you want to see in the office?
