Flowing in “the zone”.

It’s a beautiful place, being “in the zone”. Everything feels automatic, almost like you don’t have to do anything but show up. Work just flows, the contacts you needed show up, the inspiration is flowing abundantly and all is well.

Unfortunately, some days it seems like there’s a barrier surrounding “the zone” and you just can’t get in, no matter how hard you try.

True happiness at work is highly correlated with states of flow, or being “in the zone.”

Flow is achieved when we match a high level of challenge with a high level of skill. High skill level without challenge results in relaxation or boredom and challenge without skill leads to worry and anxiety.

To enhance flow at work, consider whether you need to increase your skill level or require greater job responsibility. By becoming vigilant about your mental state you can find creative ways to enhance states of flow and thus improve your happiness and job satisfaction.

Here are a few suggested steps on achieving flow in the workplace, enjoy!

  1. Do work that you love.
  2. Choose an important task.
  3. Make sure it’s challenging, but not too hard.
  4. Find your quiet, peak time.
  5. Clear away distractions.
  6. Learn to focus on that task for as long as possible.
  7. Enjoy yourself.
  8. Keep practicing.
